ASK GEN: front porch makeover

Uncategorized 112 Comments

Dear Genevieve,

I’ve followed your television career for a long time and absolutely love everything you do. You’ve got a great personality to go with your awesome talent as a designer. I’d love to have your opinion on my outdoor entry.

I’ve lived in my home for about 13 years. I have a large covered front porch which houses a swing and wicker furniture. The flooring is wood and my dilemma is what color it should be. It has previously been stained in white. Steps leading to the porch are brick with white railing. The siding on the house is cream with white trim and blue shutters. I’m planning to re-paint the shutters black. What color would you recommend the floor be painted or stained as well as a color for the front door?

Your advice and expertise are greatly appreciated! Thanks for sharing your talent!

Lynn

Okay tweeters, you were on fire at the HGTV party! My goodness, some major hate on Nina and a lot of curiosity about how the show is run. Let’s dig in:

  • How does Nina escape elimination every week?

As the judges, we do not see Nina’s behavior during the process, we are ONLY judging everyone on two performances, their design performance and their hosting performance. On stage the contestants stand for sometimes over an hour and tell their truths, we listen,  but again, the proof is in the pudding. What did you contribute/create/conceptualize this week and how well did you present/execute it. I’m loving this chance to get to see the back-story on everyone, we are experiencing this together. But I hear you all LOUD & CLEAR, you are not fans of Nina. I liked her during the show…whatevs

  • Where did I get my jacket?

God am I glad I wore that, it was FREEZING on top of the roof, we were all literally shaking, poor Candice in her silk…ouch. So funny how there is so much banter on wardrobe, I am flattered and surprised. My jacket is from Elizabeth and James and my knickers (sounds dirty) are Vince.

  • Why is Vern the main judge?

Here’s the deal people, Vern has been on the show since it’s conception and every show has to have a leader and ours, in this case, is Vern. He is an AMAZING judge,  He has me rollin’ during our hours of chatter. Candice and I do speak A LOT, however, editing plays a serious role in you guys not seeing a lot of that. Sorry, not in control of that one. I may be bias, but I think the judging conversation is the most interesting part of the show.

Now, I have to prepare for the BIG trip coming up in less than a week…you guys know what I’m talking about right?

Let’s recap my dears, we had a slammin’ (so 90’s yikes!) party last night up on the HGTV Design Star twitter board and there is not nearly enough space in my brain nor are my fingers nimble enough to keep up with the bunch of you in that short hour. That being said, let’s use this as a place to get things done, it seems you all have a lot of questions so I’d like to attempt to answer as many of them as possible. Let’s go:

RT @GabbinGalNan: @real_genevieve i would love to know what you judges said about Nina in your private convos? #designstar

ANSWER: All of you should know that we do not witness the everyday bickering while in the design process nor at the penthouse, I am watching it for the first time with you. It’s actually good that we don’t see any of this drama as it has nothing to do with the design nor their host presentations and that is what we are there to judge them on. That and that alone. Nina presented herself in a very confident and poised fashion on the stage, I enjoyed her and liked her straight to the point attitude. Like Antonio, Nina is from New York, we live in a city where BS doesn’t fly and this feels very familiar and admirable to me. I think the difference is that when we have a woman with this personality, so many are offended, when it comes wrapped as a man he’s labeled as “tough” and “cool”. Something to think about…

@real_genevieve Loving all the insights!  What was your favorite part of the men’s apt?  Women’s?

Every week all three of us have posted our favorite and least favorite aspects of each space  at:

FAQ

Q:Genevieve, where did you get those grey shoes?

A: Louboutin, cannot for the life of me find an image of them online….

Q: How long do the judges really diliberate?

A: It depends on the challenge, anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour and a half. Here is what happens, after we speak to the contestants on stage, they are asked to leave the room. Once they’ve left the room, the three of us chat for as long as we want and then have the contestants reenter. We watch host presentations and if anyone of us has a change of heart, we state it in the short little moment you see the three of us huddled on stage. That is how it all works from a production standpoint, for us to show you all of that would take up too much screen time and isn’t that interesting in the end. We are VERY serious about choosing the right person to win this coveted role, none of us are taking this role lightly. And no, it isn’t unanimous every week.

Let the Conversation Begin…

My Ferry Ride to a Month of Relaxation

Here she is, warm, delicious, summer. The most beautiful time of the year in my opinion (yes, I am a Leo) and the perfect time to finally launch the conversation that has been brewing for years. We’ve seen each other from TV sets, appearances and social networking but now it’s time to get intimate. Yes, lovelies, let’s talk. Now that I have a piece of digital real estate all my own it’s time to play. Send me your struggles, your thoughts, your delights and I will be listening, answering and sharing as many of them as humanly possible. I will also use this as a place to stretch my design head a bit further, giving you access to beautiful and a bit of design life behind the cameras. I hope you find this little oasis in the chaos that is design, the internet and life. Let’s play.
